Adoption 101: Where Do I Begin?

Many couples and individuals hoping to become parents often look to adoption. This endeavor can be both exciting and overwhelming. We know there is an abundance of information available about adoption. In fact, there is so much information, that people often ask,“Where do I begin?”

This workshop - held quarterly with a $10 per person fee for members and $12 per person fee for non-members-  is intended for people looking into adoption for the first time and the presentation includes information on:

  • Getting started
  • Timelines
  • Expenses
  • Special issues
  • Infant adoption
  • International adoption
  • Older child adoption
  • Cultural issues
  • Waiting children in Ohio
  • Birthfamilies and more
  • Open Adoption

Participants will get a realistic overview of the adoption options and the process involved in each from both professionals and parents.  Information is given that provides you with a wealth of resources to help you on your adoption journey.

About the Instructor:

MAUREEN STAUNTON HEFFERNAN, Master of Science in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University, School of Applied Social Sciences has an independent practice offering program planning and development, administrative and case consultation, grant writing, expert legal testimony, small and large group training, staff coaching, and technical assistance. Particular expertise in child welfare, permanency planning and special needs adoption. Maureen also is an Adjunct instructor,Case Western Reserve University, Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences Cleveland, Ohio, teaching graduate level Family and Child Policy and Community-Based Practice courses. Previously coordinated collaborative adoptive family assessment project; field instructor for graduate students.
