Ms. McCall, a grandparent caring for her grandchildren: Ms. McCall is a grandmother caring for her two grandchildren who both have special needs and medical concerns. When her children began to struggle more in school in 2020, she reached out to Educational Liaison, Danielle, for help navigating the complex process to establish an Individualized Education Program (IEP). She was overwhelmed and stressed as she tried to advocate for her grandchildren’s growing educational needs. Danielle helped file a formal complaint with the school, kept Ms. McCall informed on her rights as a guardian, and advocated for her grandchildren in school meetings. Beyond securing an IEP, Danielle also made it a priority to keep the children engaged over the summer and was a comforting resource for the family during mental health challenges that flared throughout the uncertainties of the pandemic environment.
