X-WR-CALDESC:If you have either found family using commercial DNA testing o
r been found by family who used commercial DNA testing (examples of commer
cial DNA testing are Ancestry.com\, Family Tree DNA\, 23&Me\, My Heritage\
, etc.) then this is the group for you. You do not need to have a formal a
doption connection to be in this group\, but you do need to have a DNA dis
covery for this group to be relevant to you. Examples include individuals
with a known connection to adoption such as birth/first parents\, grandpar
 ents\, and siblings\, adoptees\, donor-conceived individuals\; also\, indi
viduals with unexpected parentage results among those not adopted such as
unknown child discovery\, unexpected niece\, nephew or cousin discovery\,
individuals discovering they are donor-conceived or adopted (late discover
y adoptees)\; anyone who has who found unknown siblings. international ado
ptees connecting to family including cousins\, unexpected grandparent disc
overies\, and the many other scenarios that are surprising folks with toda
y's widespread commercial DNA testing.\n\nWhile most of our DNA Discovery
Support Group meetings have an open discussion format\, the December 6 mee
ting will have a special topic\, 'Direct to Consumer DNA Kits – a good gif
t idea or not?' If you are considering giving a DNA kit as a holiday\, bir
thday\, or special occasion gift\, you aren’t alone. Autosomal DNA testin
g\, such as Ancestry and 23 and me\, is heavily marketed and often on sale
through the holidays. These tests can be exciting and very fulfilling. Th
ey are also a highly personal decision\, inextricably linked to identity a
nd family. Join us as we discuss our decision to test\, and the pros and c
ons of gifting a DNA test to others. Space is limited to maintain the abil
ity of those registered to participate in the discussion. Our special topi
c meetings are very popular and frequently have a waiting list. \n\nWhy is
this group needed?\nFinding family\, or being found - whether you are loo
king or not - is a major life event. It can upend long-held beliefs about
ourselves and challenge the very things that make us feel like\, well...\,
ourselves. Things like biological parentage\, ethnicity\, religion\, birt
h order\, just to name a few. There are also a myriad of reactions from th
ose who have either unexpectedly found us or to the news that we have foun
d them. Sometimes those reactions are not what we had hoped for\, or what
we anticipated. It can all be very overwhelming. This group will focus on
supporting each other during and after such DNA discoveries. These are not
one time events\; they are lifelong journeys.\n\nWhat is the scope of thi
s group?\nThis peer support group is not meant to replace conventional the
rapy or to delve into the technical aspects of understanding your DNA resu
lts\, but rather serve as additional support on your personal journey to i
ntegrate your DNA findings into your life. Through listening and sharing w
ith your peers\, the hope is you will get the support you need to face the
challenges that your DNA discoveries have presented. The focus of this gr
oup is on the emotional journey\, and not the technical aspects of DNA res
ults or the interpretation of results.\n\nMeeting Information:\nThis meeti
ng is a virtual meeting led by trained\, volunteer facilitators Becky and
Oliver\, held on the first Tuesday of every month from 8-10 pm ET. The mee
ting is held via the Zoom platform (which can be accessed through a home c
omputer/laptop\, tablet\, or mobile phone) and will require an internet co
nnection or phone data connection. Pre-registration is required and can be
completed by clicking on the registration button in the right-hand corner
of this page and following the prompts for registration. \n\nThe meeting
s are free and open to anyone touched by a DNA Discovery. Membership in Ad
