Changes in Ohio’s adoption law impacts what information Ohio adult adoptees (born in Ohio and adopted between the years 1964 and 1996) will have access to. Beginning on March 20th, adult adoptees will be able to request their original birth certificate, which will most likely include information that will greatly assist in the initial stages of the search process.
While obtaining this information is very helpful, it is only part of the puzzle. There are still other important steps to consider in the search and reunion process. The new law changes what information adoptees have access to but it does not change the need for assistance and support during the search and reunion process.
Our Search Assistance program is designed to provide a unique type of support which encompasses both the technical and emotional components of search and reunion. We do so by offering our expertise, resources and guidance to assist with the technical part of search. We also provide one-on-one support and opportunities to connect with others impacted by an adoption journey to assist with the emotional component along the way.
We encourage people in search to attend our General Support and Discussion Meetings, which are offered throughout the month in various locations in Cuyahoga, Summit and Lake Counties. (For details, click here.) These meetings provide a safe environment to share and receive information to help prepare for and obtain support during the search and reunion process. Attendees find these meetings to be beneficial during this process and long after.
Since 1988, we have helped in over 2,000 successful reunions with adults who were separated by adoption. Outcomes of a search can vary widely; therefore, providing consistent support during the process and beyond is something we recognize as vital to long-term healing.
