Special Topic Meeting facilitated by Lindsey and Nikki: Open Adoption and Grief Can Coexist
Open Adoption and Grief Can Coexist
About the Discussion:
For many people, the term “open adoption” brings assumptions of reassurance, connection, and reduced loss. While openness can create meaningful relationships and moments of healing, it does not erase the complex grief that many birth mothers continue to carry. In this special topic meeting, we will explore the nuanced realities of open adoption and the ways grief, love, gratitude, joy, longing, and loss can all exist at the same time. Together, we will discuss how openness can change over time, the emotional impact of ongoing contact, and the importance of creating space for honest conversations about the lifelong experiences of birth mothers. This meeting is open to all impacted by adoption, including adoptees, adoptive parents, professionals, and supporters who want to listen, learn, and better understand the complexities of open adoption.
Facilitators Nikki and Lindsey lead our monthly Birth Mother Support Group which provides a safe and supportive environment to help with the complexities that are often part of the adoption experience. While these meetings are usually open only to birth mothers, this meeting is open to the full constellation.
